One of the most common repair calls we get for heat pumps is that it’s stuck in one mode or the other. If you’re a heat pump user, then you know these are incredibly efficient, refrigerant-based, and year-round systems that provide you with efficient cooling and heating. But… one problem in particular can cause it to malfunction–its inability to switch from heating mode to cooling mode or vice-versa.
When this happens, it’s usually because of a stuck reversing valve, which requires a call to us. First, though, check to make sure the air filter is clear of debris and the thermostat is working (and set) correctly. If you’ve checked both those things and the problem is still occurring, then it’s time to give us a call.
This isn’t, however, the only problem you might ever face with your heat pump. Read on as we uncover some heat pump symptoms that mean it’s time to give our number a dial.
Operating your heat pump shouldn’t be an excessively noisy experience. Sure, there is no such thing as a completely silent HVAC system, but you know better than anyone what the day-to-day noises of your specific system are. Trust your gut–if you hear anything out of the ordinary, it probably signals a repair need.
This can include a rattling noise indicating a loose part, a hissing sound as the sign of a refrigerant leak, or anything else you deem unusual. Remember, ignoring a strange sound can allow whatever the problem is to have a domino effect in your system, causing other components to break down too.
Nobody thinks using their HVAC systems is cheap. But, using your heat pump shouldn’t break the bank, either. Take a look at your next monthly energy bill. If it’s significantly higher than what you paid this same time last year, it’s a sign that something in your household is working inefficiently. Since HVAC systems account for about half of all a home’s energy use, it could very well be an inefficient heat pump to blame.
So, let’s say that your heat pump successfully switched over to cooling mode, but still, you aren’t feeling cold air coming from the vents. If anything, it’s a bit lukewarm, and doesn’t seem to be reaching the temperature you set on the thermostat (if this is the case, the compressor will just keep running without cycling off).
