Tips for Staying Warm This Winter

man-shivering-in-homeOur number one tip for Salt Lake City homeowners to stay warm this winter is to ensure that their heating system is in good shape. This means scheduling maintenance for it first. Maintenance tune-ups should be scheduled once a year (twice, if you have a heat pump system) to keep the system working as efficiently and effectively as possible, for as long as possible. Maintenance tune-ups even help fend off up to 85% of the repairs that a heater may ever need in its lifetime.

But what if you haven’t had maintenance in a while, and your heater broke down? This is of course an emergency and you’ll want to call us right away. However in the meantime, while you wait for repairs, you want to do whatever you can to stay comfortable. Read on for some tips on how to do so.

Having your heating system break down can feel pretty stressful. And stress plus a lack of physical comfort simply don’t mix, especially when temperatures are freezing or below freezing! So, what can you do to mitigate the cold while you wait for repairs?

Enjoy Warm Food and Drink!

If you have a hearty meal you’ve been putting off making, now is the time to do it! Not only can you enjoy the ambient heat from your oven or stove, a warm meal will help you and your family feel warm from the inside out.

Bring on the Sunshine!

In the summertime, you’ll see us share tips on how to keep the heat out of your home. One of these tips is to keep the blinds and curtains to south-facing windows closed to keep the radiant heat out. Well, this concept can be reversed in the wintertime! Pull those blinds up and those curtains open, and let the sunlight in.

Utilize Your Ceiling Fans!

“Wait,” you might be wondering, “why would I use my ceiling fans in the wintertime?”

Well, because there is a switch near the center of the fan that reverses the direction of the fan blades. Why does this matter? Because heat rises, and when you reverse the direction of your fan blades, it pushes down the warmed air that has collected at the top of the room or the top of your home.

Limit Outdoor Activity

We know this one sounds like a bit of a bore. After all, what’s the fun of snow if you and your family can’t go sledding in it or make snow angels? We get it! But if you don’t have a warm house to return to at the end of the day, you’re going to regret getting cold and wet outside.

Go For a Drive!

If weather conditions permit, go for a drive! Utilize the heating system in your car to keep yourself and your family warm and comfortable while you wait for repairs to be done on your heater. Go get some coffee or hot chocolate and enjoy the day.
