When it comes to home comfort, or your health and safety, it’s easy to forget about the quality of your water. But thinking about it is important! The quality of your water can impact your quality of life in addition to your health and the health of your family.
If you have hard water, which is water with a high level of mineral deposits in it, a whole-house water softener can get your plumbing system back to normal. Some water supplies need something a little extra though. Think about it—even though your municipal water plant does a great job of purifying the water in your area, it has a long way to travel through pipes from that plan to your home.
It can pick up contaminants along the way! And that’s where a reverse osmosis (RO) system comes in.
Choosing a Whole-House Reverse Osmosis System
Is an RO system right for you? It could be, especially if you want your family to drink healthy water. There are a number of benefits to choosing this type of water treatment system, including:
- Minimal Maintenance Needed: There are not many mechanical components requires for a reverse osmosis system to actually work, which means it’s really easy to maintain. Many homeowners these days rely on portable water pitchers that have expensive filters you have to replace every couple of months, if not more often. Maintaining an RO system is so much easier you barely have to think about it! We do recommend that you have it inspected once a year by our team, however.
- Very Effective: You may be surprised to learn that RO systems are 99% effective at clearing contaminants out of the water on a molecular level. This makes them one of the most effective types of water treatment systems on the market.
- Self-Cleaning: The cross-flow operation of a reverse osmosis system means that the semi-permeable membrane basically cleans itself! That said, you will want to have that membrane replaced annually when you have your inspection done, so you can rest assured that your RO system will continue working as it should.
Do RO Systems Ever Need Repair?
Yes! They may be fairly simplistic systems with low maintenance needs, but just like any other mechanical system or any other water treatment system, they may need repair at some point. While this shouldn’t be too often, some common repair calls we get include:
- Bladder Damage: This is one of the most common repair calls we get for RO systems. The bladder helps to regulate water pressure, and sometimes it can become damaged or deflate, resulting in low water pressure. If you notice lower water pressure coming from your sink faucets, this could very well be the cause.
- Check Valve Malfunction: This is the component that ensures only clean water enters the storage tank while it diverts contaminated water from the system.
- Leaks: Sometimes RO systems can develop leaks, particularly where the check valve is. This is also a potential problem with the flow restrictor.
Fortunately, you needn’t worry if you have repair needs for your RO system—we’re here to help!
